5 Home Remedies To Reduce Visible Pores Naturally

Pores are a natural conduit which help supply the skin with nutrient-rich natural oils so as to keep it hydrated and supple. They perform several important functions like eliminating toxins from the body, helping the skin breathe and controlling body temperature.

However, these pores can become clogged due to dirt and excess sebum. This gives them a dilated or even sometimes a flared appearance. These clogged pores can often result into acne and blackheads. People with oily skin unfortunately are more susceptible to clogged pores because their skin secretes more oil resulting in higher chances of this oil catching dirt and clogging up the pores.

Prolonged sun exposure, aging, stress, genetics and a poor skincare routine serve to exacerbate and make the situation worse. It is therefore imperative to have a handy set of home remedies to help in tightening and unclogging the pores. We list them below.

  1. Ice

ice-cubes-1224804_640

Ice works as a simple and highly effective home remedy because of the tightening effect it has on the skin. When used correctly it helps improve circulation and promote a healthier skin.

Wrap a few ice cubes in a wash cloth and hold it on your skin for 15-30 seconds. Do this a few times on a daily basis. You can reduce the frequency as you see improvements.

  1. Multani Mitti (Fuller’s Earth)

Multani mitti is a natural remedy to visible and clogged pores as it helps absorb excess oil and dirt from the skin. Additionally, it reduces scars and benefits sun-damaged skin.

  1. Yogurt

Yogurt contains lactic acid that gently removes excess oil, dirt and dead skin cells, thereby minimizing the appearance of enlarged pores.

Apply a thin layer of plain yogurt directly on the face. Let it sit for 10 minutes and wash off with cold water. Repeat 3-4 times a week for atleast a month.

  1. Sugar Scrub Recipe

lump-sugar-549096_640

Homemade sugar scrubs are of great help as they gently exfoliate the skin and remove excess oil and impurities.
Take 1 tablespoon of Olive oil, 2 tablespoons of Sugar, and 4-5 drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice, mix them well. Gently massage it to your skin for 30 seconds, then wash it off with cool water.  Use this simple recipe once a week for visible improvements in the skin tone and texture.

  1. Lemon Juice, Rose Water and Cucumber Toner

detox-684107_640

Lemon juice is perhaps one of the best natural remedies for reducing visible pores, as it contains enzymes which firm up and tighten the facial skin.
Mix 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice, 1 cup of rose water, and 1/2 cup of cucumber juice. Apply a liberal amount on your skin, use a cotton pad for this purpose. Keep it on for 10 minutes and then wash off with cold water. This not only helps cleanse and tighten the pores but also helps lighten the skin tone.

  8. Use as you would regular sunscreen. Best if used within six months.

Benefits:

Red Raspberry Seed Oil is loaded with Alpha and Gamma tocopherols (Vitamin E)  which are potent antioxidants which mop up cell damage and neutralize free radicals. Red Raspberry Seed Oil offers strong UV protection, it has an SPF of 28-50 against UVB rays (cause sunburn) and 6.75-7.5 against UVA rays (cause ageing). It is packed with Cartenoids (Vitamin A) and Phytosterols both of which are strong antioxidants. It is also rich in Linoleic acid content, which regenerates cells and is anti-inflammatory.

Zinc Oxide is a physical sunscreen which blocks or scatters sun’s UV rays so they do not penetrate the skin. It also absorbs the UV rays thus making it a complete natural sunscreen solution. Zinc Oxide is a broad spectrum sunscreen in that it protects from both UVB and UVA rays. Unlike other chemical sunscreens, Zinc Oxide is completely safe, even for babies (recommended by the FDA).

Olive oil has abundant reserves of vitamin E, which helps it improve skin health by treating acne, inflammation and even serious ailments like eczema and psoriasis. It is also very nourishing and moisturising by keeping the skin hydrated. Olive oil is an effective anti-ageing solution as well, in that it is packed with antioxidants and hydrating squalene and is therefore effective against free radicals and photo aging.

Coconut oil increases the antioxidant activity in the body and increases skin’s self healing ability, thereby being very potent for sensitive skin. Coconut oil is antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial thereby making it great for treatment of atopic dermatitis. Coconut oil is highly moisturizing although people with adult acne should use it with caution because of its comedogenic attributes.

Shea butter is rich in vitamins A, F and E. It provides essential fatty acids (oleic, stearic, linolenic and palmitic acids) which enable collagen production. In addition to offering UV protection (~SPF 6) it is incredibly nourishing and moisturising for the skin. Due to the presence of cinnamic acid, Shea butter is very potent against skin inflammations and is recommended for acne prone skin.

Beeswax acts as a surfactant ,when blended with other ingredients, it forms a protective barrier on the surface of the skin and helps protect against environmental damage. Beeswax is antibacterial helping keep the skin clean and free from potential infections. It is also a humectant, which means it attracts water and helps keep the skin hydrated.

Carrot Seed Oil has high levels of Cartenoids (Vitamin A) which are strong antioxidants and reduce free radicals damage to the skin. It also has a decent SPF value which makes it a good ingredient for any natural sunscreen.  Carrot Seed Oil tightens and rejuvenates the skin, also it stimulates the sebaceous glands thus benefiting dry skin.

Vitamin E oil boosts the production of collagen, which is chiefly responsible for maintaining skin’s firmness and elasticity. It therefore reduces the formation of fine lines and wrinkles which are the key signs of ageing. Vitamin E oil has high levels of antioxidants which fight free radicals and thereby helps in healing sunburns and reducing hyper pigmentation in the form of sun spots. Vitamin E oil is a strong emollient which enables it to easily unclog pores and remove impurities from the skin.

7 ways to get rid of Dark Circles and Puffy Eyes

FB-Photo-2

Because it’s impossible for the naked eye to see inside the body, the skin often provides the first signs of aging and other health issues. It is well known that as we age our skin becomes less supple, giving way to wrinkles and dry skin in most people.  Quite often, the first place this is visible is around the eyes. Yes, we are talking about Dark Circles and Eye Bags.

Now we all know how important a part diet plays in how our skin looks. Having said that, there are ways in which we can positively bolster the skin so as to bring about a natural healthful glow with fewer visible signs of wrinkles or other forms of environmental damage.  Below we will learn how all this is possible with the smallest of changes to your lifestyle and using nothing but natural homemade cosmetics.

Learn more about the unique demands of your skin, take the skin quiz here

So, here is a list of 7 ways, including lifestyle changes, dietary steps and a couple of DIY Beauty recipes which will help you say goodbye to those bags around the eyes.

Control your Salt intake

Salt is usually linked to high blood pressure, but it more important to note that with all that sodium your body is liable to retain more fluids and therefore lead to puffiness and bags around the eyes. We recommend using Himalayan Salt and that too only a little bit. Avoid salty foods like pizzas and fries. Choose fresh vegetables, like celery, which will help reduce your craving for salt.

Exercise

Exercising is not only good for your health, it has manifold benefits. Especially for your skin which gets a proportionately higher supply of oxygen rich blood due to regular exercise, this helps improve skin’s healing and damage repair capabilities. The area around the eyes being a generally sensitive area receives exponential benefit from an increased blood supply, thus helping reduce dark circles and visible bags around the eyes.

We also recommend performing regular eye massages which involve slow exercises of the facial muscles to help tone and tighten them.  Using light pressure from your fingers the massages (refer this video) involve various facial expressions and pressure points.

Use the Homemade Shea Butter and Frankincense Eye Cream

Use this all natural homemade eye cream every morning and night around the eyes.  We recommend buying, wherever possible, preservative-free organic ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce unrefined Shea Butter
  • 10 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
  • 1 ounce pure Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vitamin E
  • 1 ounce unrefined Coconut Oil

Instructions:

  1. Gently heat the Coconut Oil and Shea Butter in a bowl
  2. Add the other ingredients and mix well
  3. Once blended, transfer to a glass jar and use regularly

Your Sleeping Position and How much Sleep do you get

While it is a well known fact that stress coupled with a lack of sleep is one of the prime reasons for dark circles, it is also worth noting that our sleeping position also has an important impact on the fluid retention in the area around the eyes as well. We, therefore, recommend getting atleast 8 hours of sleep a day. Also, to combat dark circles and puffy eyes, sleeping on the back is the best sleep position that you can adhere to. This helps avoid fluid build-up around the eyes due to gravity, you can also consider adding an extra pillow, provided it does not interfere with your sleep.

Ensure that you get enough Collagen in your diet

Collagen is one of the important building blocks which influences the damage repair and healing capabilities of the skin. Our body’s natural collagen production ability slows down as we age and is one of the primary reasons for eye bags.

It is therefore imperative to bolster your body’s collagen levels through your diet. Try chicken bone broth or other natural collagen supplements to ensure your skin’s firmness and youthfulness.

Use Homemade Rosehip-Lavender Eye Serum

Make this extremely potent, natural Eye Serum in the comforts of your home and use regularly at night for flattering results.

Ingredients:

  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 1/2 ounce Rosehip Seed Oil
  • 5 drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • 1/2 ounce pure Aloe Vera Gel

Instructions:

  1. Mix the ingredients in small bowl and then transfer to a glass spray bottle
  2. Before getting into bed, spray the serum around the eye area ensuring that your eyes are closed
  3. Gently massage the solution around and under your eyes
  4. Wait for it to dry before jumping into bed

Say goodbye to those Cigarettes and Limit Alcohol intake

Cigarettes dry out and weaken your facial skin especially the delicate area around the eyes. This causes premature aging in addition to dark circles and bags around the eyes.

Alcohol serves to dehydrate your body and skin. Dehydration causes the area around the eyes to appear dark and sunken. We recommend giving up alcohol altogether. In unavoidable cases, try ensuring that you get adequate amounts of water to rehydrate yourself.

It has natural moisturizing and emollient properties, thereby preventing dry patches and irritations. When used regularly it helps in controlling acne because of its vitamin A and E content.

Lavender oil helps the body in the production of powerful antioxidant enzymes like catalase, glutathione and SOD within a day of use. It has strong antimicrobial properties which help in speedy recovery from skin irritation. Lavender oil also helps in reduction of age spots.

Evening Primrose Oil is rich in essential polyunsaturated fatty acids like Linoleic Acid(70%) and Gamma-Linoleic  Acid which are both series Omega-6. Moreover, the oil also has reserves of Vitamin C, Potassium, Magnesium, Manganese, Iron among a host of other essential nutrients. Evening Primrose Oil has, therefore, strong anti-inflammatory properties and is considered one of the best treatments for eczema, redness and itching.  It helps boost blood circulation to the skin thereby helping treat tired skin.

Pomegranate Oil helps stimulate Keratinocytes, which are a group of cells found in the outer layer of the skin and help reverse skin damage. It also contains a unique polyunsaturated oil called Punicic Acid, which is an Omega-5 fatty acid and has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  The oil also helps smoothen the skin and improve the skin texture.

Toss out your Moisturizers and Night Creams; Use Natural Oils instead

Toss out those chemical laden moisturizers and night creams. Use natural oils to bring renewed radiance back to your skin.

aroma-906137_1920

It is indeed both incredible and disheartening that we have not been educated about the benefits that natural oils (Carrier and Essential Oils) provide. We have been content using over-the-counter face creams without ever trying to evaluate their safety and efficacy firsthand. It is all too easy to  squarely place the blame on big cosmetic companies and their advertising propaganda. Unfortunately though we have been equally complicit, choosing skin clogging – yet easy to apply – chemical laden creams over natural oils which are more efficacious and half the cost.

Natural Oils are not miracles but the right plant oil can make a remarkable difference for almost all skin types. Natural Oils are for anyone whose skin can use a boost of nourishing, soothing renewal or damage repair. Perhaps the easiest way to include natural oils in your daily skincare regimen is to use them as a night time moisturizer or lotion. We recommend using an organic, all natural cleanser in the night and then follow it with a natural oil which is suited to your skin.

Below we list a set of Natural Oils which are organized by skin type. These will help you decide where to begin – if you need a more holistic skincare regimen based on your skin type – take the skin quiz here.

Benefits Ad Pedem Litterae:

Almond oil is approximately 60% oleic acid which gives it a chemical composition similar to our sebum, so it is readily absorbed by the skin. It is a strong emollient which enables it to remove skin impurities. Almond oil has anti-inflammatory properties, helping it calm and soothe irritated skin. It is also extremely nourishing and moisturising for the skin.

Lavender oil helps the body in the production of powerful antioxidant enzymes like catalase, glutathione and SOD within a day of use. It has strong antimicrobial properties which help in speedy recovery from skin irritation. Lavender oil also helps in reduction of age spots.
